Attorney General's Department - 7 October 2010 - Commonwealth and Queensland agree on disaster resilience partnership

Hon Robert McClelland MP. Commonwealth Attorney-General, Robert McClelland and Queensland Minister for Emergency Services, Neil Roberts, today announced a joint implementation plan for disaster resilience initiatives in Queensland in 2010-11. 'This is an excellent example of cooperation between Governments and is part of the joint $44 million investment over four years for natural disaster resilience funding for local communities,' Mr Roberts said.

In a world first, funding for an apprenticeship program in the minting industry was announced at the conclusion of the recent 2010 Mint Directors Conference. 'This program is a first of its kind in the minting industry.

Australian Antarctic Division Sea Bird Ecologist Dr Barbara Wienecke is working with Melbourne Aquarium's staff and colony of Gentoo penguins, to trial a data-logging leg band which will help the long-term monitoring of their Adelie cousins in Antarctica. Melbourne Aquarium Gentoo penguins Roxy, Crumpet, Mushroom, Aroha, Herbie, Woody and Indi will be fitted with the 1.5g leg bands, with Aquarium keepers watching on to make sure they do not interfere with the penguins' daily activities. 'It is a great advantage to have an opportunity to test a new method before going into the field where this kind of monitoring is not possible,' said Dr Wienecke.

I come from Brisbane and I originally qualified as a vet and have spent most of my career in more of a scientific profession as a microbiologist and parasitologist. So I am really looking forward to that.

A village close to the world heritage site of Elephanta Caves in India will for the first time have reliable light after sundown thanks to unique, solar-powered technology invented by Sydney-based company Solar-Gem Pty Ltd. The Elephanta Island trial is the result of a joint Austrade Australia-India effort. Five more Australian Federal Police firearm and explosive detection dog teams will soon be patrolling Australia's airports, after graduating from a rigorous training course today. Today's five graduating teams are the first of 17 new teams to be operating in Australian airports by mid next year. The $17.8 million boost for the AFP's firearm and explosive detection dog teams is part of a $200 million package for aviation security initiatives.

A new information booklet launched this week in Sydney will assist workers from overseas to know about their rights and help reduce the incidence of exploitation. The department is presenting the booklet to union organisers today in western Sydney and to a range of other organisations in the coming weeks. A departmental spokesman said the booklet was targeted at educating both overseas and Australian workers as well as employers and addressed some common misconceptions on work sites.

The Minister for Jobs, Senator Chris Evans, welcomed the creation of 49,500 jobs in September, the strongest monthly employment growth since January this year and more than double median market expectations. This is another very strong result which underlines sustained jobs growth in our economy, Senator Evans said. Senator Evans said Australia's unemployment rate is around half that of major economies such as the United States and Europe where the jobless rate is around ten per cent.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has issued a draft determination proposing to deny authorisation for an exclusive pilotage services agreement at the Port of Brisbane. 'The ACCC considers that the exclusive agreement will remove any potential competition to supply pilotage services at the Port of Brisbane by preventing other providers from entering that market,' ACCC chairman Graeme Samuel said. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission today granted conditional authorisation for a pro-forma liquor accord arrangement in Queensland for three years. 'The ACCC considers that the measures proposed are likely to assist in efforts to reduce violence and other alcohol-related harms in and around drinking venues in Queensland,' ACCC chairman Graeme Samuel said. The ACCC considers the restrictions in the pro-forma accord arrangement are likely to have some effect on price and consumer choice.
